Passenger vehicle makers shipped more than 5 lakh cars and SUVs to dealers in October, the first time monthly wholesales have crossed that mark, as companies stocked showrooms for Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali.
Maruti Suzuki dispatched 2,12,384 vehicles, up 20.5% from a year earlier. Tata Motors shipped 73,894, up 20.9%, keeping second place narrowly ahead of Mahindra at 73,338. Mahindra said it had its highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales.
Hyundai’s dispatches rose 16.7% to 62,799. Kia set a monthly record of 33,462.
Toyota had the steepest fall among the major makers. Its dispatches dropped 26.7% to 29,521.
Wholesale figures show what makers send to dealers, not what customers buy. Companies report on slightly different bases, so the numbers are not strictly comparable.
